Mathematics

Our Curriculum Intent

At Clayton Hall Academy, we aim to create the very best Mathematicians by developing their confidence, independence and resilience through effective challenge and connect into applications from the real-world. We challenge students to think, act and speak like those working in the field would. We do this by gold standard teaching which ensures students understand underlying Mathematical principles and can apply them in a variety of contexts (routine and non-routine). We teach content in its totality and our philosophy is to teach ‘depth and breadth’, to create a strong knowledge and skills base, which will enable our students to progress to the next key stage.

Our Mathematics curriculum develops fluency in the fundamentals so that students develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately. Students are explicitly taught strategies to solve problems, and are encouraged by teacher modelling to express themselves independently and collaboratively using Mathematical language and creative solutions. Our students own their learning, and through a line of enquiry are developing the necessary skills of becoming mathematical thinkers.

The rationale behind our curriculum design includes making learning stick by using a spiral approach. The main topics taught are Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Shape and Data, which are all taught in a cycle. Each time students revisit an area, they are challenged further with more complex content, building on what they have already learnt. We ensure the level of challenge is high for all our students, as well as ensuring the necessary scaffolding and support is available for students who need it.
